Why Do Some Natural Diamonds Glow Brighter Than Others?

Updated over a week ago

When using your Reveal Diamond Detector 2S, you might notice something interesting: some natural diamonds glow bright blue, while others show just a soft blue glow. Don’t worry—this is totally normal! Let's break down what affects fluorescence intensity in natural diamonds.

What Is Fluorescence?

Fluorescence is the blue glow that many natural diamonds emit when exposed to UV light. The Reveal Detector shows this clearly on your screen. But not all diamonds glow the same way—even if they are all natural.

Why Is the Colour Blue, But the Brightness Different?

The reason has to do with each diamond’s unique formation underground. Here's what makes a diamond glow brighter or fainter:

  • Trace Elements (Like Nitrogen or Boron): These tiny elements get trapped in the diamond’s crystal structure. They create glowing “centres” that absorb UV and re-emit it as blue light. More trace elements = stronger glow.

  • Crystal Structure: The way atoms are arranged inside the diamond also affects glow strength.

  • Growth Environment: Heat, pressure, and underground conditions all change how a diamond forms.

What This Means for Your Reveal Analysis

If all the diamonds in your analysis glow blue, they are most likely natural.

  • A bright blue glow? Great.

  • A faint blue glow? Still natural.

What matters is the consistent blue color, not how strong it looks. The Reveal Detector uses this glow to help confirm that the stones are natural, no matter how bright they appear.

Real Example: “Same Hue, Different Glow”

In the image below, you can see six natural diamonds. They all show blue fluorescence, but with different intensities:

  • Emerald-cut diamonds (bottom row) glow brightly.

  • Brilliant-cut diamonds (top row) glow more softly.

Adjusting Exposure with the EXP. Slider

Your Reveal 2S lets you change how bright or dim things appear on screen using the Exposure 'EXP.' slider:

  • For faintly glowing diamonds, slide right to make the blue easier to see.

  • For very bright diamonds, slide left to reduce glare and see the details.

This feature is available in Standard and Detailed Analysis modes.
